Windows XP end of life

On 8 April 2014 Microsoft finally did the unthinkable and ended support for Windows XP.

"As of 8th April 2014, support and security updates for Windows XP are no longer available." - www.microsoft.com/windows/en-au/xp/end-of-xp-support.aspx

Windows XP was released in the second half of 2001, over 12 years ago, at least a billion copies have been sold to date and until August 2012 it was the most widely used operating system (until being overtaken by Windows 7).

Even now, in 2014, there is a disturbingly large installed base of Windows XP machines in corporate and government environments. Being stuck with Windows XP means:

  • being stuck with Internet Explorer 8 (later versions will not work with XP); and
  • running an operating system that has security holes and bugs that will remain unpatched.

There are a variety of reasons why you and your organisation may be stuck running Windows XP.  One of the key reasons is the need to run some legacy applications that do not support later versions of windows.

For native windows applications there are very few solutions other than replacing the applications or having them re-written for a later version of windows.  However, if the reason you're stuck on Windows XP is that you have web-based legacy applications that are only compatible with early versions of Internet Explorer, then our Layer-Z technology may provide an elegant and straight-forward answer.
