The Mont 24hr is a 24 hour endurance mountain bike race. Riders race solo or in teams of 2 to 6 riders. The race starts at noon on Saturday and ends 24 hours later at noon Sunday. Riders race through the night on a mixture of fire trails and single track through the pine forest. For 2003, the race was held in the Kowen Forest near Queanbeyan/Canberra, Australia. In previous years it was held in Stromlo Forest, Canberra but the devastating bushfires of 2003 left the completely destroyed the Stromlo pine forest and the previous years course.
Rob Allen - solo 24hr rider
For 2003, GKY sponsored solo rider Rob Allen. Rob's a local Canberra mountain bike rider who has competed in previous Mont 24hr races including winning the male team of 3 competition in last year's Mont 24hr with then team mates Tim Begbie and Toby Hobbs.
4th place
The solo male competition in the 2003 race was full of drama. Saul Britton had an impressive start and got off to an early lead.
With less than an hour to go, Joshua Street, the eventual winner was already 2 full laps ahead of second place but the two last podium positions were still up for grabs. Second, third and fourth were separated by only 20 minutes.
In the end, the final placings were Joshua Street (22 laps), Matt De-Belin (20 laps), Ian Stewart (19 laps 24:01) and our own Rob Allen (19 laps 24:02).
Congratulations to Rob on his 4th place. Just finishing a race like the Month 24hr solo is a huge effort and to finish top 5 in a field of some of Australia's best mountain bikers is a fantastic result.
